PADI® Open Water Diver
PADI® Open Water Diver is the first scuba certification level. A highly-trained PADI® Instructor will teach you how to scuba dive in a relaxed, supportive learning environment.
By the end of the course, you'll have the skills and knowledge to dive at home or abroad and be an ambassador for the underwater world.
This course includes:
- 3 Pool Sessions (and additional practice pool sessions if deemed necessary by your instructor)
- 1 to 2 Classroom Sessions
- eLearning Online
- Use of a full set of scuba gear (excluding mask, snorkel, fins, boots, and wetsuit)

This course is taught by instructor Jacob Nelson or instructor Marc Ellis.
Jacob is an instructor, sales associate, and service technician at Dive & Glide Scuba. His dive training progressed quickly after he earned his first diving certification. He earned his PADI Open Water Instructor and EFR Instructor certifications in 2020. And, shortly thereafter, he also obtained his SSI Instructor certification.
Marc has been an instructor since 1994 and has been teaching at Dive & Glide Scuba since 2022. In addition to training divers, he also heads up the organization of our dive club (Mid-Michigan Dive Adventures) meetings and events. Marc is bi-lingual (he speaks Spanish) and holds multiple diving instructor certifications as a PADI, SSI, and SDI instructor.

Training Fees Per Person: $375
- Training Fees for Satellite Courses incur additional charges and will be a higher fee due to the cost of conducting the course away from our home area.
- Our local area includes any class taking place within 50 miles of our shop in Midland.
For student safety and enjoyment:
- Our course size is limited to 6 students whenever possible.
- Ages 10+ are invited to attend.
All students must have their own mask, snorkel, boots, and fins.
- For health and safety reasons, wetsuits are not provided for pool sessions. It is highly recommended each student purchase their own 1.5mm or 3mm wetsuit for class.
- Your instructor will assist you in choosing the proper gear for your training and future diving adventures during your first class session.

NOTE: TO COMPLETE YOUR OPEN WATER DIVER CERTIFICATION, YOU WILL NEED TO REGISTER FOR OPEN WATER CHECKOUT DIVES ALSO.
- Register to complete the dives with us (the cost is $199 when you choose your dive dates).
- Or, ask for Universal Referral Forms to complete dives with another instructor or while on your next warm water vacation.
ADVANCED REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Medical forms and waivers must be completed before participation. Based on the answers you provide on your medical information form, you may be required to obtain physician approval to dive.
